How to Elope at City Hall in Chicago: The Ultimate Guide
Thinking of skipping the big wedding and going straight to "I do" in a meaningful, simple way? Eloping at Chicago City Hall is a beautiful and intimate option- and it’s easier than you might think. Here’s everything you need to know to plan your City Hall elopement with ease and style.
But before I list the steps, let me just say two things that I would want to know if I I was eloping:
-Yes, you can bring your family! The last elopment I did had about 10 guests present. It was a tight fit, but there can be some folks present. Double check in advance should this change!
-The “court” where you will be married is really a simple, plain office. I wish they’d at least put up some decor but hey- it’s not the place that matters. You, your person and the vows you make to one another are what makes this day special! Plus you can take some BOMB pics afterwards in other parts of the building and around town!
Step 1: Get Your Marriage License
To get legally married in Cook County, you need a marriage license.
Where: Cook County Clerk’s Office (Daley Center, 50 W. Washington St., Chicago, IL)
When: Monday through Friday, 8:30am-5:00pm
Requirements: Both parties must appear in person with valid IDs.
Cost: $60 (as of this writing)
Important Note: You must get your marriage license at least one day before your ceremony and use it within 60 days.
Step 2: Schedule Your Civil Ceremony
You can schedule a civil ceremony at the Marriage and Civil Union Court.
Location: 119 W. Randolph St., Lower Level, Chicago, IL
How to Schedule: Appointments are required. You can schedule online at cookcountyclerkil.gov.
Cost: $10 (Make sure you bring cash!)
When: Monday through Friday. Time slots go quickly- plan ahead!
Step 3: Plan Your Look and Timing
Even if you're eloping, you deserve to feel amazing. Consider a modern outfit, a small bouquet, and professional photography to document the magic.
Best Days to Elope: Mid-week mornings (Tuesday through Thursday) tend to be quieter, making for a more relaxed experience and better photo opportunities.
Timing Tip: Early morning appointments give you the best chance for great lighting outside the building.
Step 4: Photography and Post-Ceremony Fun
City Hall might be brief, but it doesn’t have to be boring.
Photo Spots Nearby: City Hall has tons of beautiful halls and stairways! After photographing my couple’s at city hall, I love heading over to Lasalle and Quincy (Aka the Financial District), The Chicago Riverwalk, The Art Institute gardens, or other historic buildings on LaSalle Street that are all within walking distance.
Celebrate After: Book brunch, pop champagne on a rooftop, or take a stroll along the lakefront.
Bonus Tip:
Elopements are quick, but the memories last forever. Hiring a photographer for even one or two hours can turn a simple ceremony into a heartfelt story you’ll treasure for years. Whether it’s just the two of you or a handful of guests, I’ll capture the quiet, joyful moments that make your elopement uniquely yours.
